Read an interview on Japanese "Teacher School" website Sensei no Gakkou (with English transcript here), in which Yoshimi Ueda of Kodomo Edu International School in Tokyo, shares about the inspiration for two exciting new programs for Japanese language speakers taking place at Hanahau‘oli School this summer.

On July 20-21, from 8:30am to 12:30pm, the Hanahau‘oli Professional Development Center will host a workshop titled Introducing Early Childhood Educators to Child-Centered Inquiry, Arts Integration, and Learning By Doing. This workshop is designed for early childhood educators and parents from Japan who are interested in learning more about the theories and practices of child-centered education, inquiry-based instruction, arts integration, and learning by doing. Participants will also engage in the philosophy for children Hawaiʻi approach to community building and inquiry/dialogue-based education. Facilitated in English by Hanahau’oli School teachers Royce Bowman and Makenzie Carpenter, and with Japanese translation by the University of Hawai‘i Uehiro Academy for Philosophy and Ethics’ Dr. Aya Watanabe, participants will receive an overview of progressive education philosophy, observe students and teachers at Hanahau‘oli Summer School, and experience strategies they can apply to their own contexts.

Simultaneously, Hanahau‘oli Summer School is hosting a week-long camp for both English and Japanese speakers titled, Art Camp: Islands of Connection. Taking place July 20-24, from 8am to 4pm, children entering grades 1-4 can embark on a creative journey across the Pacific and celebrate the beautiful bond between Japanese and Hawaiian cultures. Children will experience authentic, hands-on traditions–from the mindful practice of Japanese Zen, and the delicate art of making Washi paper, to the soulful Hawaiian practices of creating kapa and weaving lauhala. This sensory-rich immersion into language, history, and place-based art will be staffed by both English and Japanese-speaking educators from Hanahau‘oli School and Kodomo Edu International School, and will serve as an observation site for the professional development workshop.

Scholarships for educators are available, and you can register for each of the programs by clicking on the images above. Questions about both programs may be directed to pdc@hanahauoli.org. We hope to see you there!
