Scholarships: The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Uehiro Academy for Philosophy and Ethics in Education is offering 10 scholarships for participants to attend this program free of charge. Scholarships will be distributed on a first-come-first-served basis, and will be given to applicants who commit to applying lessons learned from the workshop to teaching and learning in Japan or Hawai‘i. このワークショップは、以下のテーマを元に、日本から参加する保護者の方や幼児教育に関わる方々を対象としています。子育て中の方や学校の先生方、教育に関わる方であればどなたでも大歓迎です。

また、このワークショップでは、philosophy for children Hawaiʻi アプローチにより、コミュニティづくりと探究/対話型学習の実践を行います。

ワークショップは英語で行われ、日本語通訳がつきます。

100年以上の歴史があるハワイの超名門校ハナハウオリ・スクールの経験豊かな教師たちが、

・子どもを尊重する教育とはどんなものか
・子どもの「問い」を大切にする学びとは何か
・アートを取り入れることでどのような力を育むか
・体験しながら学ぶとはどういうことか

を、具体的な事例を交えながらわかりやすく紹介します。

また、参加者の皆さまは、

・教育活動の体験
・学校の教室/施設の見学
・子どもや先生のやりとりの観察
・感想や気づきを共有するふりかえり

の機会を通して、学びを深めていきます。

参加者の皆さんは7月20日~24日に行われる6~9歳を対象とした5日間のサマーキャンプ「アートキャンプ：つながりの島」にお子さんの参加登録をすることができます。また、本ワークショップの一環として、このキャンプの様子をご見学いただきます。本プログラムについてのお問い合わせはpdc@hanahauoli.orgまでご連絡ください。

ワークショップの目的

ワークショップを通して、参加者は次のことができるようになります。

1.プログレッシブ教育の理念と哲学を自分の言葉で伝える。
2. 子どもを中心にした学び、子どもが自ら問いを持って探究する学び、アートを取り入れた学び、体験を通して学ぶことの大切な考え方や基本となる理念を説明する。  
3.教室を見学する中で、子どもが自分から考え、問いを持って学んでいる場面や、アートや体験を通して学びが深まっている具体的な場面を見つける。  
4. 幼小期の子どもたちが、自分で考え、試し、表現しながら学ぶ活動をどのように支えればよいかを体験的に学ぶ。
5. プログレッシブ教育の実践と、子どもをよく観察し、尊重しながら関わる家庭での子育てとのつながりを考える。 
6. ワークショップで学んだ内容や体験した活動について、参加者同士で意見を交換し、振り返りながら理解を深める。
7.  ワークショップで学んだことを、日本のクラスや子育ての場で活かす。 

This workshop is designed for early childhood educators and parents from Japan who are interested in learning more about the theory and practices of:

• Child-centered education

• Inquiry-based instruction

• Arts integration; and

• Learning by doing.

Further, we are going to implement philosophy for children Hawaiʻi approach (p4cHI) in this workshop to build the community and practice inquiry/dialogue-based education.

The workshop will be conducted in English with Japanese translation. Expert teachers from Hanahau’oli School will provide participants with an overview of progressive education philosophy. This will include defining and providing examples of what child-centered inquiry, arts integration, and “learning by doing”  looks and feels like in an early childhood education setting. The participants will also be provided with opportunities to experience progressive education strategies they can apply to their own classrooms, observe students and teachers at the Hanahau’oli School Summer Program, and space for discussion and reflection. Participants may also enroll their children in "ART Camp: Islands of Connection", a 5-day summer camp experience for children ages 6-9 which will run July 20-24, 2026 and will serve as an observation site for this workshop. Please contact pdc@hanahauoli.org to learn more about this program.

Workshop Objectives

Participants will be able to:

1. Describe progressive education philosophy. 

2. Explain the big ideas and concepts related to child-centered instruction, inquiry-based teaching and learning, arts integration, and “learning by doing.”

3. Identify examples of child-centered inquiry, arts integration, and learning by doing when making classroom observations.

4. Demonstrate how to engage students in early childhood child-centered inquiry, arts integration, and learning by doing strategies.

5. Make connections between progressive education teaching practices and thoughtful/mindful parenting.

6. Reflect on and discuss workshop topics and activities with fellow participants.

7. Apply lessons learned from the workshop to their own classroom context in Japan.

ロイス・ボーマン
ハナハウオリスクールにてジュニアキンダーガーデン(4~5歳児クラス)の担任を務める。ハワイ大学マノア校の「プログレッシブ教育哲学ペダゴジー」研究科にて修士課程を修了。ロイスはハワイで生まれ育ち、プナホウスクール出身。ハワイ大学マノア校チルドレンズセンター（ハワイ大学関係者の子どものための保育所）での10年間の勤務を含め、長年幼児教育に従事してきた。子どものための哲学ハワイスタイル(p4cHawaiʻi)の実践者でもあり、教える、という活動を、意識的、協働的、創造的、個別的で反省的な実践として捉えている。

Royce Bowman is a Junior Kindergarten Teacher at Hanahau‘oli School. He received his Master’s degree in Progressive Philosophy and Pedagogy at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. Royce was born and raised in Hawai‘i and attended Punahou School. He has worked in early childhood education-related fields for the majority of his life, including 10 years at the UH Mānoa Children’s Center. He is also a practitioner of philosophy for children Hawai‘i (p4cHI), and prioritizes teaching and learning that is intentional, collaborative, creative, personally relevant, and reflective.

マッケンジー・カーペンター
ハナハウオリスクールにて２、３年生の担任を務める。ハワイ大学マノア校、カリキュラム研究科にて修士課程を修了。ハワイで生まれ育ち、2年生から5年生までの担任を経験したが、そのほとんどのキャリアを4年生の担任として過ごしてきた。過去8年の教員経験の中で子どものための哲学ハワイスタイルと地域密着型学習を教育活動に取り入れてきた。また、子どもたちのクリティカルな思考を育てることに情熱を持っている。また、ハナハウオリスクール、カエレプル小学校、サンセットビーチ小学校、ワイキキ小学校を含む、p4cに取り組む学校の関係性を強化するコラボレーション事業にも取り組んでいる。

Makenzie Carpenter is a 2nd and 3rd grade teacher at Hanahauʻoli School. She earned her Master’s degree in Curriculum Studies from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Born and raised in Hawaiʻi, Makenzie has taught grades 2–5, spending most of her years in the classroom as a 4th grade teacher. In her 8 years of teaching, she has consistently integrated philosophy for children Hawai‘i (p4cHI) and place-based learning into her teaching practice and is passionate about fostering critical thinking in her students. Makenzie also values building strong school partnerships. Most recently, she has worked on a collaborative effort to strengthen connections among P4C schools, including Hanahauʻoli school, Kaʻelepulu Elementary, Sunset Beach, and Waikiki Elementary.

通訳 渡邉　文

ハワイ大学マノア校にて博士号(教育学)を取得。博士論文では日本の教師たちがどのようにp4cHIの実践を経験し、変容してきたかについて研究を行った。ハワイ大学上廣哲学倫理教育アカデミー、インターナショナルサポートコーディネータ。国際的なパートナーシップの構築と、子どものための哲学（P4C/p4cHawaiʻi）およびインクルーシブ教育の取り組みの推進を中心に活動をしている。日本とハワイの教育者と協働し、有意義な対話と関わりを促進するためのプログラムや学術交流の企画・開発に取り組んでいる。

Translator – Aya Watanabe received her PhD in Educational Foundations from the University at Hawaiʻi at Manoa researching the transformative impact of philosophy for children Hawaiʻi (p4cHI) on teachers in Japan. She is currently serving as International Support Coordinator at the University of Hawai‘i Uehiro Academy for Philosophy and Ethics in Education. Her work centers on fostering international partnerships and advancing p4cHI and inclusive education initiatives. She collaborates with educators in Japan and Hawai‘i to develop cross-cultural programs and academic exchanges that promote meaningful dialogue and engagement.
