Parent & Community Engagement

At Hanahau‘oli the family is the first and foremost educator of children; the school seeks to create a close connection between home and school and expects direct parent involvement in a child’s school experience. The learning environment integrates school life with the home and world, and encourages collaboration with parents and the community. To facilitate these beliefs parents not only engage at Hanahau‘oli via traditional formats and settings (e.g. communication, correspondence, open houses, and performances), but also as curriculum. Parents are invited to share about their work, lives, and experiences with children as a regular part of the classroom curriculum. They also help to set up learning journeys outside of school where children can see parents engaged in real life tasks. Parents are provided opportunities to exhibit life-long learning alongside students during classroom activities, friday assemblies, and out of school events organized by the Hui Hanahau‘oli.
