In Memory of
Matthew D. Liu ’05
Matthew D. Liu (Hanahau‘oli Class of 2005) passed away following a tragic work incident on June 18, 2022, at the young age of 28.
Born and raised in Hawai‘i, he was an avid water and water sports lover. When he wasn’t participating in water sports, you could always find him at the beach—whether surfing, body boarding, snorkeling, or just soaking up the sun.
Matt was a genuinely selfless guy, with a heart as big as his smile. He had a magnetic personality, and a way of making everyone feel welcome and at ease around him.
Matt’s love of “learning by doing” started at Hanahau‘oli, where he attended Junior Kindergarten through 6th Grade. There, he learned critical and creative thinking skills that he carried throughout his life. Matt went on to attend Kamehameha Schools, where he kayaked and paddled for his high school team.
After graduating from the University of Portland Shiley School of Engineering in 2016, Matt started his career with Kiewit as an engineer, where he spent 6 years successfully estimating and building multiple essential infrastructure projects across the west coast. Being a Kiewit engineer was no doubt his dream job—one where he found a home for his ingenuity, creative thinking, crafty building abilities, and all of his other skills that make a top notch engineer.
Above all else, Matt was a family man and a loving son, brother, and uncle. His death is an incomprehensible loss to those that loved him so dearly.
