Malama Ia Hanahau`oli
 Annual or Capital or Both?

Friends of Hanahau`oli are sometimes confused by requests to Malama Ia Hanahau`oli (care for Hanahau`oli). The Capital Campaign that enabled the school to build the Kulaiwi (grades 2 and 3) and Junior Kindergarten buildings was an important one time request to help. Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of our community, two phases of the major building project that is part of the Board of Trustees long-range master plan were completed. This campaign asked for what is often called a “bricks and mortar” gift.

The Annual Fund is the appeal that occurs each year to support the annual on-going operational needs of the school. This is a recurring appeal that runs from July 1 to June 30, Hanahau`oli’s fiscal year. Gifts to Annual Fund go primarily to two funds:

• the General Operating Fund that helps to make up the difference between the actual cost of a Hanahau`oli student’s education and the tuition charged.

• the Louisa Palmer Scholarship Fund that helps to maintain diversity at Hanahau`oli by providing financial aid to over 17% of our children.

The General Operating Fund and tuition fees make up the bulk of revenue for our annual expenses chief among which are teacher’s salaries and other instructional expenses which allow us to provide for a rich curriculum for children. The Louisa Palmer Scholarship Fund assists children whose families would otherwise not be able to afford a Hanahau`oli education. Hanahau`oli’s mission statement clearly states the school’s commitment to a diverse student population and its desire to reflect the community of which we are a part. This too enriches the educational experience for each child who learns here.

Friends of Hanahau`oli are encouraged to give annually to the Annual Fund. When a capital campaign is launched, it is hoped our `ohana will also give generously to build for Hanahau`oli. These are two important ways to Malama Ia Hanahau`oli. How wonderful to support both!
