Home/School Connection

Working together on behalf of a child’s progress and growth is the goal of Hanahau`oli’s home-school connection. Families are invited to be a part of their child’s educational experience in a variety of ways, ranging from attending assemblies and programs to participating in the classroom program.

Parents are expected to participate in annual room meetings to hear about the yearly program as well as in three-way goal-setting conferences when children share their goals for the year and how parents and teachers can support achieving them. Throughout the year, parents are invited to request conferences to meet with teachers to discuss progress if they have questions or concerns; teachers, too, may ask parents to meet to discuss a child’s growth and needs.

Parents also have many opportunities to contribute to the classroom experience as volunteers in the classroom and on learning trips, as resources for classroom units sharing their particular interests, work and work places or talents, and as room parents. Parent participation enriches each child’s experience and creates a direct tie between home and school. Teachers communicate regularly with families sharing what is happening in the classrooms and about areas of study as well as upcoming events encouraging parents to discuss what is going on in school at home. Progress reports are provided for JK children at the end of each semester, three times a year for children in the multiage classes and quarterly for sixth graders.

Hui Hanahau`oli is the school’s parent association. All families are members and are encouraged to participate in its friend and fund raising activities. The Hui offers parent enrichment evenings along with social events bringing families together throughout the year. A highlight for many is the annual Hui Campout held each Spring.

Parent and family involvement in the life of Hanahau`oli adds immeasurably to the quality of the educational experience for all and creates a natural connection between learning at home and at school.
